Participation: Midlands campaign unites community

Young people and residents teamed up when Wolverhampton City Council fenced off an area used by teenagers to play football after other residents complained about footballs landing in their gardens.

With help from Wolverhampton Clubs for Young People (WCYP), the young people complained to their local MP, Rob Marris, that the council had not consulted them. Marris, the Labour MP for Wolverhampton South West, arranged a meeting between councillors, residents and young people.

"Too often young people are demonised and there is not a forum where they can put their views to adults and vice versa," said Marris.

The young people have now formed a committee, supported by local residents, to put forward ideas for facilities.
