Project: Hertsmere Community Spaces
Funding: From £50,000 awarded by Big Lottery Fund
Aim: To create attractive and safe shelters for young people in local parks.
Young people have teamed up with the police and local residents in Hertfordshire to design community shelters that can help counter antisocial behaviour.
The project, which began in summer 2007, came about after Hertsmere Borough Council consulted local young people about their needs. They complained that there was nowhere for them to go, particularly in Bushey, Radlett and Potters Bar.
Ed Sandham, sports and cultural services manager at Hertsmere Borough Council, said there were objections to the project over fears the shelters could become hubs for antisocial behaviour. To counter this, local residents and young people worked together on designing the shelters. A number of events were held to give people the opportunity to contribute to the design by sketching out their thoughts.
