PARTICIPATION: Electoral Commission develops outreach plan

1 min read

Beccy Earnshaw, outreach manager at the commission, said: "The aim is to get young people involved in the democratic process at some level.

It's about giving young people the tools to vote, such as making sure they understand how to register - but it goes beyond that."

The commission is an independent body that reports directly to Parliament, regulates UK elections and promotes voter awareness. It is keen to extend its youth strategy to those most alienated by politics. "We have to look beyond our existing youth network to reach more young people," said Earnshaw.

"We're looking for creative ideas on working with youth groups, and I'd be thrilled if youth workers contacted us with their suggestions. It's going to be a real challenge reaching those outside further and higher education, and we're not going to crack it straight away."
