Participation: Electoral charities target teenagers

Operation Black Vote has been working for two months on voter registration in the Black community. Its campaign culminated in a meeting between London's mayoral candidates and the Black community.

Simon Woolley, national co-ordinator of Operation Black Vote, said: "There is an education gap and an inspiration gap for Black young people, who do not understand how the political system works, or how it dictates their lives."

More than 200,000 young people have registered for the Y Vote mock elections run by the Hansard Society. These aim to give 13- to 16-year-olds the opportunity to stand as party candidates.
