The commissioner says the recruitment, rewards and job security of youth workers all need addressing. "Youth workers have low pay and no recognition. They need appropriate training, mentoring and support," he said.
Aynsley-Green is also concerned about the intellectual underpinning of the profession. "Where are the people thinking about the science of youth work?" he said. "There should be a university course devoted to it."
The commissioner is also anxious that the health of young people is incorporated in the upcoming youth green paper. But he cautioned: "There have got to be resources allocated."
Aynsley-Green intends to have his core team in place towards the end of 2005. The commissioner's office will have a presence in London, the North and the West.
