Outdoor activities: Youth club partnerships are future for Raleigh

In the past Raleigh has run its own programmes in the UK to prepare young people for overseas expeditions under the banner of Motive8. But it has decided to wind up this part of its operation. Instead, the organisation is working with partners that support disadvantaged young people, including Fairbridge, The Prince's Trust and Rainer. It was due to meet Clubs for Young People this week to discuss co-operation.

A Motive8 project in Glasgow has funding until the end of this year, but other schemes have closed. The decision was prompted in part by the end of European Social Fund support, but also reflects changes at Raleigh. Stacey Adams, who became chief executive of the organisation in January, said: "Developing young people to go on expeditions isn't where our strength is. Our job is to provide the overseas element."
