Outdoor activities: Worker acquitted of unlawful killing

1 min read

Herve Bola drowned after jumping into a pool at the Sgwd y Gwladys Falls in the Brecon Beacons in Wales, while on a trip with the London Borough of Redbridge in July 2002.

At the original inquest, in April 2005, the jury declared a verdict of unlawful killing against Daniel Brown, a part-time youth worker from Redbridge, who was accused of encouraging Herve to jump in (YPN, 27 April-3 May 2005, p2).

Last week a judge ruled this verdict could not be supported by the evidence, and substituted a verdict of accidental death. If the unlawful killing verdict had stood it could have left Brown open to further prosecution.
