Outdoor activities: Locals fight against Lake District plans

The park authority suggested that the funds from its 110,000 annual events programme should be diverted to schemes designed to bring more young people, disabled people and ethnic minorities to the area.

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, which funds the authority, has asked it to increase the attractiveness of the park to these groups.

But local opposition to the plan, which would lead to the cancellation of events such as guided walks and lectures, may see it vetoed when the 26 members of the authority meet to discuss it next month.

The authority last week postponed a debate on the issue until 7 February.
