Analysis: Practice - Outdoor activities. A trip to the country can be a breath of fresh air

2 mins read

City-dwelling young people can gain a lot from getting out into the countryside.

Amid all the furore over plans to redistribute funding in the Lake District, that is the key message countryside organisations are trying to get across.

The fuss was caused when the Lake District National Park Authority announced plans to divert some of its events budget away from its free guided walks programme because the walks predominantly attracted "middle-aged, middle-class White people" (YPN, 12-18 January, p7). Instead, the money would fund events to bring more disadvantaged groups to the countryside.

The pressure's off

The walks have been rescued for now thanks to a donation of 38,000 announced last week by clothing company Hawkshead. This will hopefully create a calmer atmosphere in which to look at how to increase access to the countryside.
