Activity ideas: Things to do - Visit the countryside

2 mins read Youth Work
The weather might be cold but that shouldn't stop youth groups exploring the natural world around them.

With 14 national parks in the UK, there is sure to be a wilderness a couple of hours drive from wherever you live.

The Peak District, which covers 555 square miles from Ashbourne in Derbyshire to Marsden near Huddersfield, is among the most popular of the national parks, attracting an estimated 10 million visitors each year. Young people can take part in a range of activities there, from climbing and mountain biking to more leisurely activities such as nature walks and bird watching.

Organising the trip doesn't have to be a headache either, as park authorities are only too willing to help groups plan their visit. The Peak District National Park has even developed its own Children and Young People's Plan, which outlines how visiting youth groups can help young people to be healthy, learn new skills and make a positive contribution - all aims of the government's Every Child Matters green paper.
