One organisation offering surfing to young people is Cornwall Youth Service. It runs the Wave Slaves Surf Club in partnership with surf school Escape. The scheme teaches young people the basics of how to ride waves and also gives them the opportunity to train as a coach.
Annie Railton, youth service manager for Liskeard and Looe, says the project was set up in response to young people's feedback. "Although we have the best waves in Cornwall, surfing is not something that is often taken up by local young people due to the high cost of equipment and lessons. We held consultations with our Positive Activities for Young People's group 18 months ago and identified that this was something it wanted to do."
