Imagine if then was now. Picture the young Howard caught in a truancy sweep. According to Department for Education and Skills guidelines, he would be returned to pastoral or other staff primed to receive him back into school. His parents would be notified, and formal recording procedures would be instituted. A personal attendance plan would be completed for him within one week of being picked up.

School support staff such as the learning mentor would check his attendance over a four-week period. Because multi-agency working can lead to better outcomes for the young people involved, plans would be discussed with other agencies such as Connexions.
