OPINION: The Ferret ... digs behind the headlines

They say so regularly. There is an all-party parliamentary group on youth affairs. MPs express concern about children's rights and young people's participation. They make serious and thoughtful speeches in support of them.

So explain this. Recently, the news broke that three boys aged between 13 and 15 were being held at Guantanamo Bay. Their detention is in clear violation of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. This guarantees that "every child deprived of his or her liberty shall have the right to prompt access to legal and other appropriate assistance".

Valerie Davey MP set up an Early Day Motion so MPs could register their concern. All were invited to put their names to a simply worded statement noting the facts of the violation and urging the Government to do all in its power to ensure that the US fulfils its obligation. The total number of signatures so far is 24.
