OPINION: The Ferret ... digs behind the headlines

It jars with a common perception. The private sector is supposed to be the "real world" of tough competition, hard decisions, high risk and major stress. In comparison, the public sector bumbles along in comfort.

The unreality behind these glib assumptions is revealed by a national survey of nearly 2,000 employees across all sectors. It reports that high pressure and stress are frequent among public employees. They are more likely than private sector workers to say that they feel overwhelmed by work.

One explanation is that those in the frontline of service provision have no means of limiting their workloads. When can a youth worker say they've done enough?
