Opinion: The case for a national school bus scheme

1 min read
If the Government had failed to notice the increasing demands to reform the school transport system, then the sight of a yellow school bus on College Green outside the Houses of Parliament last Thursday morning ought to have focused attention.

The stunt marked the publication of a report by the Sutton Trust that makes the case for a national system of school buses, akin to the yellow bus system that exists in the United States.

The attention is long overdue. For years, school transport has been neglected.

The rules about entitlement to free travel have not changed for more than 60 years. In the meantime, the number of children travelling to school by car has doubled, with school run congestion causing health and environmental damage. Calls for children to walk or cycle to school have had little impact; the distances involved, perceived risks and a lack of alternatives mean that parents continue to opt for car travel.
