Opinion: Soapbox - Children's centres can drive a fairer society

1 min read
The Chancellor's recent Budget announcement of funding for 1,700 children's centres, ahead of the spending review, surprised some. But it's a sign that children's centres are an idea whose time has come.

Children's centres are the driving force for fairer, better communities.

They will give children a good start in life; they will help parents get qualifications, get into work and escape poverty; and they will ensure families get the services they need before crises develop.

The Budget provided funding for children's centres in the most disadvantaged wards until 2008. Building on Sure Start programmes and neighbourhood nurseries, they will bring together childcare and early education, health and family support, employment and other services.

The challenge is to make these centres a reality. We must also keep our eyes on the Chancellor's long-term pledge of a children's centre in every community. That is crucial if we are to reach all children living in poverty.
