The Children's Society and Oldham children's centres.

1 min read Early Years
What's happening? The Children's Society has just announced a new contract with Oldham Metropolitan Borough Council to take over the running of five out of 14 children's centres in the area. It is the first time the charity will run children's centres in Greater Manchester and the North West. It runs around 15 centres in England.

How much is the contract worth? The contract is worth almost £1m a year and more than 25 jobs will be created.

What will the charity add? Rob Jackson, assistant director of The Children's Society, says it hopes to bring more creativity to how the centres' "core offer" is delivered. For example, staff are already discussing innovative ideas on how to advertise services to communities.

Anything else? "It's a cliche to talk about the voluntary sector's ability to work with families who have fallen off the radar of statutory services, but I believe it will be true in Oldham," says Jackson. "While budgets are tight for everyone, it is vital that we work flexibly and efficiently to deliver affordable and high-quality children's services." In addition, The Children's Society says it will place a strong focus on enabling children and their parents to participate in services.
