After one of the wettest Julys since records began, the sunny days ofearly August were greeted with a certain degree of caution across theUK. For those involved in the children's centres programme, which lastmonth endured another round of critical assessments, news of theGovernment's 4bn "cash injection" for Sure Start, early years andchildcare is prompting a similar response.

The funding, spread over three years, is designed to help fulfil theGovernment's pledge to have a children's centre in every community by2010. Children's minister Beverley Hughes said the money would be spenton targeting the most disadvantaged areas, additional training andsupport for the early years workforce, making sure there are sufficientchildcare places in each area, helping local authorities identifyparental needs, and informing parents about the services available.
