"I love being able to play with my mum and show her what I've been doing," says Adam Price, four, who goes to the Rawmarsh children's centre in Rotherham. His mum, Sheila, also enjoys being able to participate in Adam's learning. "This helps me to continue his learning at home," she explains. "I've also taken some courses, which have helped with my middle son, who's autistic, and I've enjoyed the contact with other parents."
Rawmarsh offers a range of activities for the 133 kids who attend the nursery and the 16 children it works with who have special needs. These range from a breakfast and after-school club, to a holiday play scheme, baby-massage and health-visitor sessions, speech and language therapy, and a dads' group. On top of all this, the centre, which is open 48 weeks a year from 8.15am to 6pm, runs a Tots to Twos club, a Bumps to Babes session for expectant mothers, yoga classes and satellite programmes for outlying districts.
