The Government's ambitions for children are encapsulated in its visionfor children's centres. Located in the heart of communities, combiningchildcare and mainstream services for families and children up to fiveyears old, centres will have links to schools, health services, jobs, training and much more. And, while children's services staff fromdifferent disciplines will be working together, many for the first time, the key to realising centres' potential is parental involvement.
By March 2008, 2,500 centres should be open, while by 2010 there will be3,500. Responsibility for delivery lies with local authorities, whichare already developing centres. Some are from existing services, andothers, like those we profile here, in exciting new buildings.
