There should be more one-to-one work. Group work is not always the best because you don't always know who's focusing on what's going on. Some teachers seem to ignore a lot of it, though I can see there's only so much you can do.
I'm working with disadvantaged young people with low self-esteem. Rather than a social worker, I'm more like a friend. I encourage them to confide in me. It gives them more confidence.
I don't believe in dragging them into my world but gradually building up a relationship with them. We offer drop-in educational support, and a place they can come where young people are safely away from the bullies.
I think art can be therapeutic. Rather than tackling the problem directly, it's something they can concentrate on to get away from the problem.
I set up a creative writing club for vulnerable young people and helped with a drama club. They gain confidence in the class as well as in other areas of their lives.
