Opinion: If I were in charge of bullied children - Claire Ord, 19, Hucknall

1 min read
We need to be more attentive to children who aren't confident. Sometime they are ignored but with more concern, confidence would improve.

There should be more one-to-one work. Group work is not always the best because you don't always know who's focusing on what's going on. Some teachers seem to ignore a lot of it, though I can see there's only so much you can do.

I'm working with disadvantaged young people with low self-esteem. Rather than a social worker, I'm more like a friend. I encourage them to confide in me. It gives them more confidence.

I don't believe in dragging them into my world but gradually building up a relationship with them. We offer drop-in educational support, and a place they can come where young people are safely away from the bullies.
