Opinion: Hot Issue - Should youth workers get time off in lieu forsleeping?

2 mins read

YES - DOUG NICHOLLS, GENERAL SECRETARY, COMMUNITY AND YOUTH WORKERS' UNION

Few workers sleep properly on residentials. They're always on duty. This is why those saying workers should not be paid for every hour away from home are advocating irresponsible practice.

But even more, they're advocating illegal practice. The law is clear; every hour on residentials should be paid at the normal rate. We're delighted many employers, led by Nottinghamshire County Council and its new time off in lieu agreement for youth workers, are paying and arranging time off in lieu properly and legally.

Residentials must be funded and staffed properly as well. Make sure workers can drive home alert and safe. Irresponsible employers be warned: you face court if you endanger workers and young people by organising on the cheap.
