Youth Work: Residential workers win time off in lieu

The agreement, brokered by the Community and Youth Workers' Union (CYWU), updates the youth service's system of time off in lieu to conform with the European Working Time Directive.

It is also in line with European case law, which states that all time spent on residentials should be taken into account as work time. Although youth workers do not get paid for sleep time under the agreement, they can count the hours when calculating compensatory time off.

Mike Weedon, CYWU branch secretary for Nottinghamshire, said: "We've looked back over 30 years and seen that many youth workers have taken young people away on residentials and not been paid for it."
