Opinion: Hot Issue - Is the problem of bullying in British schoolsout of control?

3 mins read

YES - AL AYNSLEY-GREEN, England's children's commissioner

Too many young people tell me that bullying is rife in their school.

Many young people say that what they really want more than anything is for it to stop. While it is difficult to say whether or not the extent of bullying has got worse, it does seem that there are more cases now that result in violence against the victim. In addition, some of the increased reporting may be because of our success in encouraging children to report it; this makes it seem more out of control than before.

Either way, one thing is certain: young people have a lot to contribute to the debate about bullying and have important suggestions about how to tackle it. We must listen to them and take their views seriously. Where it does happen, it should be addressed early to reduce the harm it causes and to stop it progressing to the level of violent assaults that we have seen over the past couple of weeks.
