I think this Government is taking young people more seriously than previous ones, but there is still a level of tokenism. The Government is too afraid to give young people their basic rights, such as lowering the voting age, equal pay, and those outlined in the UN convention on the rights of the child. The focus of the green paper is on protecting children rather than encouraging their imput.
However, their participation is vital because services can learn from children and young people's experiences of the system. The title of the children's commissioner should include young people as well. I think training for workers is a great idea but they need to include young people's views too.
