OPINION: Hot Issue - Is an NVQ Level 2 sufficient as a starter qualification?

We have responded to the occupational standards set up by the national training organisation Paulo. With the end of the Regional Accreditation and Moderation Panels (Ramps) earlier this year, there has been a need to standardise local accreditation. All we are doing is replacing what was a fairly large array of qualifications, which had no real standardisation, across the country.

It is a case of growing your own. There is a recruitment and retention problem in youth work and, as the higher-education route is not necessarily the right learning style for everyone, this really opens things up for people. The NVQ is not just for part-timers: it has often been used as an induction process.
