NO - James Slocombe, trustee, British Youth Council
There is a need for an International Youth Day, but I do not think this need is being fulfilled. There are not enough people promoting the day to organisations that work with young people. Only a few organisations such as Girlguiding UK have events on the day.
The theme this year, "making commitments matter", is relevant to young people because it encourages them to commit to learning and commit to exploring other communities' lives and cultures.
There are ways that the British Youth Council could raise awareness about International Youth Day, but it is a case of having the material behind us to support the campaign. It would be great if the UN could publish a programme that organisations could use. The lack of a designated programme has resulted in International Youth Day becoming a day without structure.
