Opinion: Feedback

2 mins read

As experienced careers guidance practitioners, we are saddened to read that our profession is once again blamed for the recruitment difficulties of the UK Apprenticeship system in the House of Lords report Apprenticeship: A Key Route to Skill (YPN, 25-31 July, p2).

Sir Digby Jones (now Lord Jones) rightly states in the report that "there is a fabulous future through... the Apprenticeship system".

However, practitioners know that is a view not always shared by parents and some school or college staff. We consistently work to overcome this barrier in order to encourage greater participation.

We strongly refute the suggestion that careers guidance doesn't reach the target group. We can only speak for our own Connexions partnership but we have ample provision of experienced and well-qualified advisers allocated to each school and college within our area, all of whom are as knowledgeable about Apprenticeships as they are about all other post-16 opportunities.
