Opinion: Feedback

3 mins read

I am very disheartened by the comments made by Ann Coffey, MP for Stockport, alleging the exclusion of disadvantaged young people from the Youth Opportunity Fund (YPN, 30 May-5 June, p3).

It has always been important to Wiltshire County Council's Youth Development Service and the young people scoring the applications to target and prioritise disadvantaged groups.

Wiltshire Youth Development Service uses a range of methods to engage young people in community areas most in need. This is done through street-based youth work, and 'Bridging Projects' that reach disabled young people. The service also works in partnership with a local commercial radio station, which has helped to ensure that a broad cross-section of young people has become aware of the funds and knows where to access application forms and information. By also working in partnership with other organisations such as Connexions, we have ensured targeting of young people who are not in education, employment or training. We also have good contact with voluntary sector infrastructure groups.
