Opinion: Debate - Will forcing parents to take classes improveparenting?

1 min read
The Government's latest initiatives to tackle anti-social behaviour include forcing the parents of problem children to take classes designed to improve their parenting skills, and therefore improve their children's behaviour.

YES - Joyce Moseley, chief executive, Rainer

Forcing parents to take classes can be of help, but it is the quality ofsupport offered that will make the difference. It is often the case thatsupport received by way of an order is the first offer of help a parenthas had. We should be making sure support is available as early aspossible. This means creating a climate where it is acceptable to askfor help, where support is available and accessible, and where agencieswork together to make sure the varying needs of parents and children aremet.

YES - Clive Webster, executive director for children's services andlearning, Southampton City Council
