Opinion: Hot issue - Should parenting classes be made compulsory?

1 min read

Ministers have said that they are prepared to force parents to attend classes if it's deemed to be necessary.

NO - Paul Cavadino, chief executive, Nacro

The announcement of 4m extra funding for parenting support is very welcome.

But help should usually be offered on a voluntary basis. Youth courts can already order young offenders' parents to attend parenting courses.

This has worked for some families, but we should not extend compulsory powers further. Compulsion can cause resentment and prove counterproductive.

And parents will normally accept help voluntarily when it is offered.

YES - Janet Idowu, 18, peer mentor, Rainer Basildon
