Opinion: Hot Issue - Will parenting orders curb youth antisocialbehaviour?

3 mins read

YES - Alan Charles, cabinet member for education, Derbyshire County Council

Schools work hard to deal with poor behaviour and use several methods, including working with parents, to tackle the problem. But where progress isn't being made, parenting orders can be useful as a last resort.

If a young person has been excluded for behavioural problems and parents are not complying with parenting contracts - which are agreed with parents, schools and other agencies - we will look at taking out a parenting order.

We have to go to court to get one, which I think is right.

Schools don't teach people how to be parents. New parents leave the maternity ward with a little bundle, and where do they go from there? This approach is as much about skilling up the parents as anything else.
