Occupational standards: Consultation enters final stage

The Children's Workforce Development Council is undertaking the final phase of its consultation on the skills needed by children's residential social care staff.

The council last week added new, child-specific proposals to theNational Occupational Standards for Registered Managers in Adult SocialCare and Managers in Residential Child Care.

The updated proposals include a core unit that looks at methods ofcommunicating with children, what other professionals could help achild's development, children using care services, families and carers.The unit is called Lead and Manage Provision that Promotes theDevelopment of Children and Young People.

Jonathan Stanley, acting manager of the National Centre for Excellencein Residential Child Care, said: "The people who have been drawing upthe National Occupational Standards have listened to the responses andacted on them.

"The National Occupational Standards suggest there are all sorts ofopportunities for continuing professional development."
