Residential Child Care: Draft national contract for local authorities out for consultation

A draft contract that will transform how local authorities work with children's homes has been put out for consultation.

The development of The National Contract for the Placement of Childrenand Young People in Independent and Voluntary Sector Residential Carewas co-ordinated by Hertfordshire County Council with Department forEducation and Skills' funding.

A cross-regional working group made up of representatives from England'snine government office regions was set up to develop the contract, whichwent out for consultation this week.

The aim of the contract is to ensure responsibility for the quality ofoutcomes for children in residential care homes is shared between thelocal authority and provider. The contract also aims to share goodpractice, improve partnerships, safeguard high standards of care andeducation, and provide a model that both residential homes and localauthorities can sign up to.
