Obesity: Pressure on Ofcom over advertising

Ofcom came under further pressure this week after MPs backed calls for the TV watchdog to look again at a ban on junk food ads aimed at children before 9pm.

The watchdog refused to include the watershed in its proposals oncutting children's exposure to advertising. Ofcom rejected the option astoo costly to the industry.

Four MPs, headed by Labour MP Mary Creagh, have met the watchdog to askit to reverse the decision. The move followed an early day motion byCreagh raising the issue, which was backed by 40 MPs.

A spokesman for Creagh said she also planned to take up the issue withculture secretary Tessa Jowell later this month.

The British Heart Foundation expects to hear within the week whether itwill be able to take the regulator to court for rejecting the proposal.
