More than 300 16- to 18-year-olds will be recruited to provide adviceand guidance to 11-year-olds who are overweight.
The "health mates" scheme is part of a larger drive to improve youngpeople's health, proposed in the local children and young people'splan.
The council will also offer free admission to swimming pools for allfive- to 16-year-olds at the weekend.
Four priorities have been identified in Liverpool's plan. They are:reducing childhood obesity and promoting a culture of physical activity;reducing the risk of abuse, bullying and anti-social behaviour;improving the achievements of children in care; and improving earlydiagnosis and family support for children with disabilities and specialneeds.
Paul Clein, lead member for children's services, said: "The opinions ofyoung people have formed the basis for this plan. They spoke and welistened."
