The third annual Tellus survey, which questioned 150,000 young people, asked respondents how they viewed their lives.
As well as wanting to go to the gym, 29 per cent said they'd like to go swimming outside of school lessons, but didn't get the chance. Thirty-seven per cent wanted to go to the cinema or theatre and 39 per cent wanted to go to a concert.
However, only 32 per cent had been to a youth club with organised activities in the last four weeks.
Christine Gilbert, Her Majesty's chief inspector of education, children's services and skills, said: "This survey was conducted to learn more about the concerns of children and young people and to share this information."
