More than 40 per cent of young disabled people rarely get the opportunity to try new things or learn new skills, according to research by disability charity Scope.

More than half of the 16- to 24-year-olds surveyed said they found it quite difficult or very difficult to do things spontaneously, such as go shopping. More than half said they don't get the opportunity to explore their sexuality or have a sexual partner.

Overall, 12 per cent of young disabled people say they have very little fun in their lives, and more than 45 per cent believe that their quality of life will, at best, be the same in five years' time or even worse.

Wheelchair user Zara Todd, 22, said: "When it comes to simple things like access to shops or restaurants things get really bad. It is impossible to just decide on the spur of the moment to go out with your mates."
