In 2005, 62 per cent of graduates left university with more than 10,000 worth of debt. But 64 per cent of students did not regret going to university despite the financial burden.
Joanne Coombs, 22, recently graduated from the University of Surrey in Guildford with a degree in psychology and owing 15,000. She says: "I wanted to go to university and I needed to go university to get to where I wanted to be in my career. It was really hard, but I would not have done it any other way."
Joanne had various jobs throughout her time at university, from working in a student bar to a placement at the Home Office. According to the study, 78 per cent of young people said they would be unable to attend university without a part-time job.
