When 2,000 of them were questioned by national volunteering charity TimeBank, students gave encouraging news for the youth work sector: nearly half of them said they would like to work with children. Overseas development was second, with many students also saying they would like to do environmental work or work within sport.
Figures from another TimeBank survey, in partnership with recruitment firm Reed Executive, show 73 per cent of employees would employ candidates with volunteering experience over those without it. And 94 per cent of employees believe volunteering can add to the skills of their workforce.
The figures have been released in conjunction with a campaign, Saint or Sinner, designed to inspire and enable more students to give time in the community, run by TimeBank and Student Volunteering UK.
