For 2002, 65.3 per cent of 18 to 24-year-olds relied on their parents for housing, reflecting the increasing economic and residential dependency of young adults.

Of those who did leave home, the report found there was a strong chance that young people in northern Europe would return home because of financial pressures.

Differences between countries in Europe also reflect differences in social values. While between 57 and 60 per cent of young people live at home in northern Europe because of living costs, 90 per cent of Italian and Spanish young people chose to live at home, according to the report, because of the strong family bonds that exist in southern Europe.
