Figures from the Department for Work and Pensions for March detail fluctuations in adult incomes. These can be used to gauge child poverty rates by tracking the number of children in a household that has an income 60 per cent below the national median amount of 187 per week, before accounting for housing costs.
Between the periods of 1996/97 and 2001/02, child poverty levels dropped by 500,000. But Martin Barnes, director of the Child Poverty Action Group, said that the Government has a long way to go to achieve its long-term pledge of eradicating child poverty within 20 years, a pledge made under the Government's public service agreement.
