CHILD POVERTY: Low-income children need more support

According to the group, the increase is necessary if the Government is to meet its target of reducing by a quarter the number of children living in poverty by the end of 2004-05.

Child tax credit stands at 27.75 per child each week. The rate from April 2004 is due to be revealed in Brown's pre-Budget statement this autumn.

Martin Barnes, director of the Child Poverty Action Group, said: "Significant increases in financial support have been made, but more needs to be done if the targets to lift children out of poverty are to be achieved."
