The percentage of pupils achieving level four or above in Key Stage 2 English and maths increased by one per cent in the past year. Eighty-one per cent of pupils achieved level four or above in English in 2008, while 78 per cent achieved level four or above in maths.
With regard to writing, 74 per cent of girls achieved level four or above in 2008, compared with 60 per cent of boys. Girls also outperformed boys in reading and science.
The Department for Children, Schools and Families said the results were provisional, pending the Sutherland Inquiry into problems surrounding this year's tests.
However, Chris Keates, general secretary of the NASUWT, said: "The results are based on a statistically robust sample. Any claims that not all the results are available and they should not be published is ill-informed nonsense."
