Last year, 77 per cent of pupils attained Level 4 or above inmathematics and 80 per cent attained Level 4 or above in English. Butgovernment targets state that 85 per cent of pupils should have achievedLevel 4 or above in both mathematics and English by the year 2006.
John Chowcat, general secretary of children's services union Aspect'said: "One of the problems with national testing is that it just focuseson academic achievements. We support the move towards a moreindividually sensitive approach to testing as outlined in thegovernment's Children's Plan."
