Children of professional parents are much more likely to achieve five or more A*-C grade GCSEs than children of parents in manual occupations.
The data comes from from the DfES's ongoing Youth Cohort Study, which states: "The socioeconomic status and educational attainment of parents can have a very significant impact on the GCSE attainment of their children."
The category 'other/not classified' included a high percentage of respondents who had neither parent in a full-time job. About on in four teens in this category got five or more A*-C grades: a third as many as at the other end of the socioeconomic scale.
