Despite this, 34 per cent of young people feel that angling is cruel, while 23 per cent believe anglers don't care enough for the environment.
The number of young people who think that angling is OK has dropped since the last survey in 2001, when 58 per cent voiced their approval. But the agency says that more young people are willing to give angling a try, and that those who have gone fishing before are keen to do it again.
Young people said that having someone to go fishing with would encourage them to take up the activity. Mick Watson, project manager at Get Hooked on Fishing, said: "If they go with friends, they are more prepared to give it a try. What is also attractive to young people is that to go fishing they need to get out of the area they live in and broaden their horizons."
