Northern Ireland: Youth council plan delayed until 2009

Education minister Caitriona Ruane announced the extension of the deadline, originally set for April 2008, in an open letter, saying the process is "too big and complex". The move is part of a wider review of public administration.

Once it is taken inside the Government, the youth council will sit in an Education and Skills Authority. This will be formed by merging the five Education and Library Boards that deliver youth work in the country.

David Guilfoyle, chief executive of the Youth Council for Northern Ireland, said: "We are planning to consult colleagues to put forward ideas for the best structure for youth services during the convergence process."
