Northern Ireland: Young people want integrated schools

Young people in Northern Ireland want more integrated schools, according to a report revealing what they think about sectarianism.

One young person said that if people were educated together at a young age, Northern Ireland would be "more peaceful with less conflict".

The young people also wanted more informal mixing between schools and better facilities and activities for young people to mix in a non-sectarian atmosphere.

Around 200 16- and 17-year-olds took part in the research for Voices behind the statistics: young people's view of sectarianism in Northern Ireland.

Ruth Sinclair, director of research at the National Children's Bureau, one of the project partners, said even though it was now legally possible, only five per cent of schools were integrated.
