NCB Now: Talk and accept, urge young people

1 min read
Four young people who took part in an NCB project in Northern Ireland spoke about their experience at a major conference held in Belfast recently.

The conference, which took the theme Towards a Post Conflict Society, included a discussion on the role played by children in peace processes in South Africa, the Middle East and Northern Ireland.

The young people - Damien Harris, Ciaran Moynagh, Laura Montegomery and Francis Abbs - presented findings from an NCB study on young people's views of anti-sectarianism.

The findings were the result of a project involving 200 pupils from 11 schools across Northern Ireland, first in individual school settings, and then bringing together young people from different communities to explore their views on living in a divided society and discuss ways to help Northern Ireland become a post-conflict society.

The study generated valuable information on the views of young people, and those involved said they found the process of working with their peers across communities on sensitive issues very thought provoking.

The young people recognised how ingrained sectarianism was - but also showed a great desire for change.

The challenge they set the audience - and anyone interested in moving towards a genuinely post-conflict society in Northern Ireland - was to talk, listen, compromise and accept.
